Better Homes & Gardens at a glance

June 9, 2010

Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes of a large magazine corporation? Wonder no more!  I will give you a really quick tour.

Better Homes and Gardens is a Meredith Corporation magazine. Meredith Corporation is a family owned business that publishes MANY magazine titles. Home Decorating, wood working, quilting, food and farming magazines, just to name a few. They not only publish magazines but also books, the famous red plaid cook book and many more. They have been in business for over 100 years. The first picture was taken from the original entrance to Meredith. It is now a window that looks onto the front grounds, embellished by this commissioned piece of art – a garden trowel.

The second picture is my favorite, because I love kitchens! Isn’t this one beautiful? This is where the test kitchens entertain guest like us! See the salads on the counter, that was our lunch! mmm good. We toured the whole test kitchen facilities, that doesn’t happen every day – they don’t do tours. Wow, what a place. And they have taste testing meals, wouldn’t that be fun.

The next picture is the one and only Jennifer Keltner Editor of American Patchwork & Quilting – hostess with the mostest!! She was explaining how they layout the magazine. How cool to stand in the sewing lab and see first hand how the magazine comes to life, the bits and bites of how they decide what they put in the pages, the placement, colors, what sells well and what doesn’t. It is a real equation.

Then we went downstairs to the photo studios. Where the magic happens. They have prop rooms FULL of stuff – you name it they got it in there. Then the blank rooms that they magically make into what appears to be rooms. They have racks of flooring and paint etc. Do you see that cut out in the roof of the room? If I tell you what they do with that I would have to…you know…LOL

This is an inset plaque in the walk way of the test gardens. These gardens were not huge but beautiful. They test everything in their gardening magazines in this very garden. They don’t treat the plants extra special so that what they tell you will survive and how to take care of it is really true. I love this garden shed, wish I had one.

Well I have probably let you in on enough secrets. I don’t think I have actually recovered from that trip. Ideas are starting run wild and I am craving some sewing time. Wish me luck!!

Hope you enjoyed the tour.
